Where to eat in New Norfolk

The Woodbridge Waterfront Rooms provides room-only accommodation and does not serve breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Guests can choose from cafés, bakeries, restaurants, pubs and takeaway food in New Norfolk, many within walking distance of The Woodbridge. There are also several excellent dining options elsewhere in the Derwent Valley and along the road towards Hobart.

Opening days and hours can change, particularly outside the summer season. We recommend checking directly with each venue before visiting and booking restaurants in advance.

The Woodbridge Guest Kitchenette

Our Guest Kitchenette is available to guests 24 hours a day and provides a convenient place to prepare or enjoy simple meals and takeaway food.

Tea and coffee facilities are also provided in every guest room.

Woolworths supermarket is located in Burnett Street, within walking distance of The Woodbridge. Glass and Brown Paper Pantry, also in Burnett Street, offers a selection of interesting packaged meal options.

Free gas barbecues and riverside picnic tables are available on the New Norfolk Esplanade, approximately 200 metres from The Woodbridge.

For 24 hour convenience

Mood Food in the service station just a block away, corner of Montagu and Burnett Streets is open 24/7.

Nor just for milk, drinks, sweets, crisps, ice-cream etc, Mood Food has hot meal takeaways, hot chips and hot snacks, cold wraps, sandwiches.

So if you are very late arriving or get the munchies in the middle of the night or early morning, help is just a short walk.

Most of our guests enjoy the flexibility of having breakfast in town or collecting coffee and something to eat before setting out for the day.

The Bush Inn

Our much loved local, just 200 metres along the river from The Woodbridge, now offers a-la-carte breakfasts on selected mornings. Check availability and book online.

The ArtHouse New Norfolk

Located in High Street, opposite the Post Office, The ArtHouse is a popular local café offering good coffee, homemade food and sweet treats. It is also a lovely place to browse locally made items.

Banjo’s Bakery Café

Banjo’s in High Street is a convenient option for early coffee, pastries, bread, pies and other bakery food. Guests often call in before starting a day trip through the Derwent Valley.

Circle Coffee House

A local favourite for morning coffee and takeaway food, with limited indoor and outdoor seating.

The Quilted Teapot

Located in The Close beside historic St Matthew’s Church, The Quilted Teapot combines a café with a colourful quilting shop. It serves coffee, tea, light meals and refreshments, with a warm fire on cooler days.

The Agrarian Kitchen Kiosk

The Agrarian Kitchen Kiosk offers house-made pastries, cakes, sandwiches and salads featuring seasonal produce. It operates on selected days and opens later than most breakfast cafés, so check current hours before visiting.

Black Swan Bookshop

Black Swan combines books and coffee in a characterful old building near Willow Court. It is a pleasant choice for a slower morning, although its trading days are limited.

Lunch in New Norfolk and the Derwent Valley

The Agrarian Kitchen Restaurant

The Agrarian Kitchen Restaurant is one of Tasmania’s most celebrated dining destinations. Located in the historic Willow Court precinct, it was named Gourmet Traveller’s 2024 Restaurant of the Year and was the publication’s Tasmania State Winner for 2025.

The restaurant is approximately four or five blocks from The Woodbridge and can easily be reached on foot. It serves lunch on selected days, and advance reservations are essential.

The more casual Agrarian Kitchen Kiosk is located in the same precinct.

The Shed at Derwent Estate

The Shed Restaurant at Derwent Estate Vineyard offers à la carte dining with expansive views across the Derwent River and surrounding vineyards.

It is approximately 15 minutes by car downstream from The Woodbridge. The cellar door opens daily, while restaurant hours are more limited. Reservations are recommended.

The Bush Inn

The historic Bush Inn overlooks the Derwent River approximately 200 metres from The Woodbridge. It offers casual pub lunches and dinners (and now breakfasts) in one of New Norfolk’s best-known heritage buildings.

The Bush Inn dates from the same early colonial period as The Woodbridge and is widely recognised as one of Australia’s oldest continuously licensed hotels. Expect generous pub food, friendly service, open fires in cooler weather and occasional live music.

Bookings are strongly recommended, particularly on weekends.

Salmon Ponds

Salmon Ponds, approximately 10 minutes from New Norfolk, combines heritage trout ponds and established gardens with an on-site café. Keep an eye on the water—a platypus is occasionally seen helping itself to fish food.

It is an enjoyable lunch or morning tea stop and an attraction in its own right.

Plenty Cider

Located near Salmon Ponds, Plenty Cider offers locally produced cider in a relaxed rural setting. Food availability varies and may include platters, visiting food vans or the pizza oven, so check what is planned before visiting.

Lunches and Day Trips Further Afield

Clyde Mill Distillery and Kitchen

Clyde Mill occupies the historic former Nant property near Bothwell in Tasmania’s Central Highlands, approximately 45 minutes from The Woodbridge.

The restored property includes a distillery, cellar door and restaurant showcasing regional produce. It makes an interesting destination for lunch as part of a drive through the Central Highlands.

Opening days vary seasonally, and reservations are recommended.

Dining at MONA

MONA is approximately 20 minutes by car from The Woodbridge and offers several dining choices. The Source and Faro provide destination dining, while more casual options include Moorilla Wine Bar, Heavy Metal Kitchen, Void Bar and Moorilla Cellar Door.

Venues operate on different days and some are seasonal. Check MONA’s current dining information and make advance reservations for The Source and Faro.

The Possum Shed

The Possum Shed at Westerway is a popular stopping point on the road to Mount Field National Park. It offers light meals, cakes and refreshments beside the Tyenna River, where platypuses are sometimes seen.

Westerway Raspberry Farm

Westerway Raspberry Farm is another convenient stop on the way to Mount Field. Seasonal berries and berry ice cream are particular favourites.

Waterfalls Café at Mount Field

Located at Mount Field National Park, the Waterfalls Café is convenient before or after visiting Russell Falls. Its traditional icy-cold Australian milkshakes are highly recommended.

Dinner in New Norfolk

The Bush Inn

The Bush Inn is our closest full-service dinner option, only about 200 metres from The Woodbridge.

This atmospheric historic pub serves casual lunches and dinners, with open fires during the colder months and live entertainment on some weekends. It is an easy walk from The Woodbridge, but reservations are strongly advised.

Welcome Swallow Brewery

Welcome Swallow Brewery is tucked away in New Norfolk’s industrial area and has a warm, lively atmosphere in the evenings. Its kitchen serves burgers and other relaxed brewery-style food alongside locally brewed beer, cider and wine.

Opening hours and events vary, so check directly with the brewery and reserve a table when required.

High Street and Burnett Street

A variety of casual dining and takeaway food can be found around the intersection of High and Burnett Streets and along High Street.

Options generally include:

• Asian food
• Kebabs
• Burgers and fast food
• Subway
• Traditional country pubs

Ding Ding’s Noodle House is a small, family-run Asian eatery near the High Street roundabout, with a few seats and takeaway available. The White Wallaby laundromat is next door, making this a convenient option while your washing is underway.

Guests can bring takeaway food back to the Guest Kitchenette or enjoy it on the Almond Terrace or at the riverside picnic tables.

Gretna Green Hotel

The Gretna Green Hotel is approximately 15 minutes upriver from New Norfolk.

This small 1820s country pub retains much of its old-fashioned character and has associations with the bushranger Martin Cash. It serves straightforward pub meals with generous country portions and makes an enjoyable alternative for a casual dinner outside New Norfolk.

Faro at MONA

Faro offers destination dining at MONA on Friday and Saturday evenings. Bookings are essential, and dining reservations do not include museum admission.

Eating at The Woodbridge

Guests are welcome to bring takeaway food, supermarket supplies or simple prepared meals back to The Woodbridge.

You can eat in the Guest Kitchenette, on the Almond Terrace, or use the free barbecues and picnic facilities beside the Derwent River. To help protect our historic rooms, we ask that meals be eaten in the Guest Kitchenette rather than in guest bedrooms.
