MONA gets even better and shame on us, we have not been keeping abreast of developments there. Undoubtedly we must utilise it more!
Then a week later, we had family visiting from interstate. It gave us the opportunity to revisit MONA. It was wonderful AGAIN! No, actually, it is better! What have we been thinking by not returning sooner!
What wonderful gift David Walsh has given us! And I don’t just mean the museum. It is all the extra wonders and delights.
House of Mirrors
As we pulled up in the carpark we saw that there was a new installation – the House of Mirror. Apparently this had been such a hit when installed for a previous Dark Mofo that they had brought it back.
House of Mirrors (2016), created by the Australian artists Christian Wagstaff and Keith Courtney, invites visitors to get lost in a bewildering maze.
Well there was a group of us, and we needed no further tempting. I come from a large, passionate family. We are ‘loud’ at the best of times! But we outdid ourselves as we got lost, got confused, got confronted and confounded.
Who goes to such lengths?
As we walked up to main ‘grassy knoll’ we passed an art installation of epic proportions – the children’s playground! Who does this? All brass and beauty, massive and imaginative! Would have cost upwards of $$$$$$ just for kids to enjoy, adults to marvel at.
This giant bronze sculpture by US artist Tom Otterness, is called Girls Rule (2020). Love it!
Everything here is designed to delight, to challenge, to engage. Nothing is mundane, ordinary is so uncool!
And the food!
We tried the outdoor BBQ venue. It wasn’t there last time we visited. In true MONA fashion it is called Heavy Metal Kitchen. We had great camel burgers and yummy char-grilled sweetcorn all served up with live music.
We returned two days later to have lunch at The Source! Even better than last time, more laid back. The entrees were superb – think twice-baked cheese soufflés and mushroom dishes to due for. Large serve for an entree and great value. We have decided this is a perfect ‘drop in for lunch on the way home from Hobart’ venue for us.
We haven’t yet been to the Faro bar and restaurant for the ‘full catastrophe’ as they call it. Will post if/when we have!
