Historic Hotel welcomed Governor of Tasmania

The Woodbridge historic hotel welcomed Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC to its bicentenary celebration.

The Governor was joined by other dignitaries, and Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis  was Master of Ceremonies. The gathering included members of Heritage Tasmania, the National Trust and representatives of the local tourism community. Special guests included tradespeople who helped restored the property. Family, friends and foundation staff members travelled from as far away as Western Australia and Queensland to attend the ceremony.

The Governor spoke to the history of The Woodbridge. Mr Peter Scott representing the Heritage Council commented on the importance of preserving these historic properties.

The Award winning Restoration was also celebrated

The Woodbridge was restored 20024-2006. It was awarded the HIA Tasmanian 2005 Restoration of the Year. It was then submitted for and won the 2006 Australian Restoration of the Year, the first win for Tasmania.

2025 is not only the 200th anniversary of the construction of The Woodbridge, it is also the 20th anniversary of its restoration. Owner John Grimley had worked with the builder to project manager of the restoration. At the celebration Mr Grimley paid tribute to the team of mainly local tradespeople who made the restoration happen. Some of the tradesmen attended the ceremony and later joined the Governor and other guests to inspect the property.

The Hon Guy Barnett representing the Premier, noted that 2025 was a big year for New Norfolk. Several historic buildings were reaching significant milestones this year, all a testament to the district’s contribution to Tasmania’s colonial foundation.
