The Woodbridge Tasmania on the Derwent River in New Norfolk

Five Reasons to Visit Tasmania – and Stay a Little Longer in the Derwent Valley

It is always lovely to see Tasmania celebrated internationally — and even more so when The Woodbridge gets a mention.

Tatler Asia recently published “5 reasons to go to Tasmania”, celebrating the island for its food, wine and spirits, great outdoors, character-filled accommodation and, of course, MONA.

And we were delighted to see The Woodbridge included among Tatler’s recommended places to stay.

From our home on the banks of the Derwent River in New Norfolk, many of the things Tatler loves about Tasmania are right on our doorstep.

Food

Tasmania’s reputation for exceptional produce is well deserved.

Here in the Derwent Valley, we are particularly fortunate to have  The Agrarian Kitchen is just four blocks from The Woodbridge. Its celebrated approach to local, seasonal produce makes New Norfolk a destination in its own right for food lovers.

Further afield, Hobart and Southern Tasmania offer everything from waterfront dining and farmers’ markets to small producers and restaurants built around Tasmanian ingredients.

Wine, whisky and local spirits

.

Tasmania’s cool climate has helped create an extraordinary wine and spirits industry.

The Derwent Valley and surrounding regions are dotted with vineyards, cellar doors and distilleries, making The Woodbridge a wonderfully easy base for discovering them at an unhurried pace.

You don’t need to spend your holiday covering enormous distances. Some of Southern Tasmania’s most interesting producers are within an easy drive — and New Norfolk has its own growing food and drinks scene.

The great outdoors

One of Tasmania’s pleasures is how quickly the landscape changes.

From The Woodbridge, follow the Derwent River towards Mt Field National Park, with its waterfalls, towering trees and rainforest walks; explore the surrounding valleys and country roads; or simply stay closer to home and wander along the river.

And sometimes the best way to experience Tasmania is to do very little at all.

Sit beneath the almond trees at The Woodbridge, watch the Derwent flow past, or step down to our riverfront and enjoy the quiet.

Rooms with a view — and a story

This was the part of the Tatler article that particularly caught our attention.

Among its selection of Tasmanian places to stay, Tatler included The Woodbridge, noting our location in the Derwent Valley, just 25 minutes from Hobart.

Built in 1825, The Woodbridge has watched almost two centuries of Tasmanian history unfold from its position beside the Derwent River.

Today there are just nine individually designed rooms within the restored Georgian mansion.

It isn’t your usual hotel. As one guest rather beautifully described it, staying here is “more like being given the keys to a friend’s country house.”

MONA — and beyond

Tatler’s fifth reason is one of Tasmania’s most famous attractions: MONA

The Woodbridge is well placed for a visit to MONA, while allowing you to stay outside the city and continue afterwards into the Derwent Valley.

That is perhaps one of the things we love most about our location.

Hobart and MONA are close by, but in the other direction are vineyards, historic villages, mountains, waterfalls and the landscapes of the Derwent Valley.

You can explore Southern Tasmania by day — and come home to the river in the evening.

Tatler Asia’s take on Tasmania

We’re delighted to have been included in Tatler Asia’s story and, more importantly, to see Tasmania being introduced to international travellers as somewhere worth slowing down and spending time.
